Churchill's Pub & Restaurant : A Touch of Britain in the Deep South

I've been to Churchill's Pub twice and each time was a different experience. The first time my husband and I went alone. We were seated in a cosy room with a fireplace and dark wooden tables and booths. This room was called the study. We both commented on how we actually felt as if we were in a pub in England. We were told, then, that all the furniture was actually imported from England.

Medjool Restaurant/Bar

I’ve never actually eaten anything here, but it’s one of the most perfect summer spots, given its roof top patio. It gets kind of crowded on a weekend night, but when I’m outside with a drink, that’s one time when crowded bars don’t matter to me as much!

True, it’s in the Mission, which isn’t my favorite spot to hang out in, and it can be kind of a scene. All that aside, some places are worth fighting the crowds and the scenes and the neighborhoods.

Like I said, I’ve never had their food, but on their website it looks DEELISH! :-D drinks are mixed well, and even when the roof gets crowded, they’re still pretty efficient.

The inside is pretty expansive, too, especially for San Francisco. There’s a DJ table, and someone who spins on the weekends, but it’s not overpoweringly loud, which is something to be said for a weekend spot in the Mission.

Kind of surprisingly (or maybe not, for something that’s in kind of a seedy looking area of town …) it doesn’t look like much from the outside. There’s a big concrete patio in front, and it’s almost kind of ware-house looking. But it’s definitely worth venturing to as far as a summer hot-spot.

ArtCade Magazine Launch Party

Jun 22 2007 - 8:00pm
Etc/GMT-8

Let's be candid: art kids do it better. They've been dictating fashion trends since Ricky
Vasquez in My So-Called Life swooned for painted Chuck Taylors from the local art geek. If fashion is the intersection between aesthetics and politics, art students are its avant-crossing guards, minus the bad plastic vests. They ooze sartorial nonchalance, they probably invented the Hipster before it got ruined, and they're still devoted to intelligent tinkering in the wasteland of post-modernism. They can also go to work drunk. Now that's a movement I could get behind.
This Friday join Washington D.C.'s upcoming art ingénues and engineers, otherwise known as a bunch of Corcoran School of Art grads and students, for their ArtCade Magazine launch party and exhibition. With drawings, paintings, and video art, like animated collages by Kathleen McGlaun (I've seen her superb Dada-like machine women), projected onto walls and performances by local bands, it promises to be one swinging soiree. FYI there is a $5 suggested donation at the door.

Rye Bar is the only bar in San Francisco

Rye Bar is the only bar

I don’t know what it is about this bar that makes me love it so. I think it’s the fact that the first time I went it was a Sunday night – so it was uncrowded, mellow, and the bartender had time to talk to you, which was how I got introduced to the best drink ever: La Luna. The drink was the latest winner of bartending competitions they host from time to time, where bartenders from around the city come and show off their stuff. La Luna sounds kind of strange but it’s pure heaven. It’s got rum, kahlua, horchata, and a couple other things that combine to make this the best thing ever.

Now, Rye does also boast some other tasty treats: grapefruit martini, if I’m not mistaken, and something citrusy called the Hemingway. All I know is, they have a way with alcohol.

Beyond that, the inside is pretty calming, even when it’s busy. It’s got dark oak paneling on the wall and all booths and couches – no real tables. PLUS – it has a patio that’s caged in. Sounds kind of weird, but considering the bar overlooks Geary and the Tenderloin, not a bad idea. You can be outside, without REALLY being out side. Kind of a plus when people are walking up to you, trying to ask for money.

It’s one of the few bars I’ll actually brave during happy hour, or on a Friday night. Yes, it’s THAT worth it.
